Checkerboard tiles bring sharp architectural contrast, geometric balance, and instant character to your floors. While traditionally recognised as a monochrome staple in Georgian and Victorian hallways, modern checkerboard layouts work just as well in compact ensuites, busy family kitchens, and open-plan living areas.

At Deluxe Bathrooms, we draw on over 20 years of experience helping Irish customers plan and complete bathroom projects, to select materials that handle real-world moisture, foot traffic, and daily wear. Our collection features hard-wearing porcelain checkerboard tiles in classic high-contrast pairings, alongside contemporary, muted tones like terracotta, sage, and limestone finishes.

Choosing the Right Checkerboard Floor Tiles for Your Space

Getting the right look comes down to scale, tone, and practical durability. A small downstairs cloakroom demands a different tile size and contrast level than an open kitchen or utility space.

Classic Black and White vs Contemporary Earth Tones

Monochrome black-and-white checkerboard tiles deliver high visual impact. They anchor period properties, vintage-style family bathrooms, and bold modern spaces. If you prefer a softer, warmer aesthetic, look at pairings like soft cream and charcoal, tumbled beige with deep olive, or muted terracotta and chalk white. These lower-contrast options bring texture without overwhelming the room.

Tile Formats and Visual Layouts

You can lay checkerboard tiles parallel to the walls in a classic straight grid, or rotate them at a 45-degree angle into a diagonal diamond pattern.

The Straight Grid: Keeps lines clean, modern, and grounded. This works brilliantly in narrow galley kitchens and rectangular cloakrooms.
The Diamond Layout: Rotating square tiles by 45 degrees creates a more dynamic pattern and can help a narrow room feel visually wider by drawing the eye diagonally across the space.

Smaller formats like 20x20cm or 30x30cm create more pattern repeats and a stronger traditional feel, while larger formats of 40x40cm to 60x60cm create a calmer, more contemporary look. Choose the format according to both room size and the level of pattern you want.

Why Porcelain Outperforms Traditional Materials

Natural marble and encaustic cement tiles look timeless, but they require regular sealing and easily stain from standing water, soap, and cosmetic products.

Our checkerboard range focuses on dense, vitrified porcelain. Here is why porcelain is the superior choice for high-moisture Irish households:

No Routine Sealing: Unlike many natural stone and encaustic tiles, porcelain generally does not require sealing, making it a practical choice for bathrooms, kitchens and hallways.
Underfloor heating: Porcelain is an excellent conductor of heat and works well with compatible underfloor heating systems, making it a practical choice for bathroom and kitchen floors.
Slip Resistance and Daily Safety: Our floor tiles carry slip ratings suitable for wet zones. Matte and textured finishes provide reliable grip under bare, wet feet right outside your walk-in shower enclosures.
Easy to maintain: Porcelain is highly resistant to staining and moisture, making it easy to clean with appropriate, manufacturer-recommended products.

Styling Your Checkerboard Bathroom

A patterned floor demands thoughtful pairings across the rest of the room. Let the checkerboard tiles act as your primary design anchor, then pull the rest of the fixtures together with clean finishes.

Pair traditional black-and-white floors with freestanding baths and classic chrome brassware for a heritage look. If your style leans contemporary, pair warm grey-and-white checkerboard floors with flat-front vanity units and matte black brassware. For the walls, stick to plain subway tiles, large-format neutral slabs, or moisture-resistant paint to let the floor pattern take centre stage.

FAQs about Checkerboard Tiles

What grout colour works best with checkerboard tiles?

A neutral mid-grey or silver-grey is usually the best option. Pure white grout discolours quickly under heavy foot traffic, while jet-black grout can bleed into lighter tiles during application. A balanced mid-grey blends cleanly into both the light and dark tiles while hiding everyday dust.

Can checkerboard tiles make a small bathroom look smaller?

Not if you choose the right scale. A diagonal diamond layout actually tricks the eye into seeing more floor width. In a small bathroom, use a 20x20cm or 30x30cm tile so the pattern has space to repeat at least three to four times across the floor.

Are these tiles suitable for kitchen floors and hallways?

Yes. Porcelain is hard, scratch-resistant, and impervious to grease, mud, and water. That makes it tough enough for high-traffic entryways, utility rooms, and busy family kitchens.
