Bathroom Extractor Fans

Good ventilation is what keeps a premium bathroom looking the way it should for years to come. Without it, steam builds up and causes real problems, from mould and damp patches to long-term structural damage. A bathroom extractor fan clears that moisture before it has a chance to settle, and our range of design-led options means you don't have to compromise on style to get it. The result is a room that stays dry, with mirrors that clear quickly after every shower.

Stop Moisture With a Powerful Bathroom Extractor Fan

Busy family bathrooms need a fan that can genuinely keep up with steam levels, and extraction power is measured in cubic metres per hour. A typical en-suite might only need a fan rated around 85 m³/h, while a larger family bathroom is better served by 100 m³/h or more. A high extraction rate doesn't mean a noisy fan, either; several models in our range use ultra-quiet motors that work in the background without drawing attention to themselves.

Wall Mounted vs Bathroom Ceiling Extractor Fan

Where you position your fan often comes down to the layout of the room. Wall-mounted units vent straight out through an external wall, which is a common and straightforward setup in older properties. A bathroom ceiling extractor fan sits flush above the shower or bath instead, with ducting run through the attic to an external vent. Because steam rises, ceiling-mounted fans often extract more effectively than wall units.

Smart Features for Irish Homes

Irish winters mean windows tend to stay shut, which traps moisture indoors for longer than in many other climates. That makes reliable ventilation a genuine necessity rather than a nice-to-have. Our range includes fans with overrun timers, which keep the motor running for a set period after the light is switched off, as well as humidity-sensing models that switch on automatically once the air gets too damp.

Maintaining Your Extractor Fan

A fan gradually loses efficiency as dust builds up on the fascia, so it's worth cleaning the cover every few months. Always switch off the power at the mains first. Most fascias simply unclip for a wash in warm, soapy water, and a clean fan will run quieter and clear steam faster than a neglected one.

Installation and Electrical Zones

Combining water and electricity calls for strict safety standards, and Irish bathrooms are divided into zones based on proximity to the shower or bath. Whatever fan you choose needs an IP rating appropriate to its zone, with IP44 typically the minimum for Zone 2 in a wet room. You can coordinate the fan's finish with your bathroom accessories and bathroom taps for a more cohesive look, though the wiring itself should always be left to a registered electrician.

FAQs Bathroom Extractor Fans

How powerful does my bathroom extractor fan need to be?

A common starting point is to multiply your bathroom's volume in cubic metres by 10 to estimate the extraction rate needed in m³/hour. However, the appropriate airflow depends on the room, ventilation system and installation. Check the manufacturer's specification, particularly for larger bathrooms or rooms with limited natural ventilation.

Can I fit a bathroom ceiling extractor fan anywhere?

Not necessarily. A ceiling extractor needs suitable space for the fan and ductwork, with the installation location also taking account of electrical zones and the manufacturer's instructions. Ideally, position the fan where it can effectively capture humid air, while keeping the duct run as short and straight as practical to maintain airflow.

Do I need an electrician to fit a bathroom extractor fan?

Bathroom extractor fans involve electrical installation and should be fitted by a suitably qualified electrician. The electrician can confirm the appropriate electrical connection, check the fan's suitability for its intended location and ensure the installation complies with current Irish electrical requirements and the manufacturer's instructions.

What is the difference between a timer and standard extractor fan?

A standard extractor fan switches on and off with the light or a separate switch, while a timer fan continues running for a set period after the switch is turned off, helping clear remaining moisture. A timer fan is particularly useful for busy family bathrooms or rooms prone to condensation. Choose the control type that best suits how your bathroom is used and how much ventilation you need.
